With this work, now in its eighth edition and approaching its 50th anniversary, Johnson (Wine Companion) and wine critic and journalist Robinson (editor, The Oxford Companion to Wine) start with general topics such as history, wine descriptions, winemaking, and wine tasting, leaving 350 pages for detailed and updated maps, photos, and suggested town-by-town routes for travelers. Toward the end of the volume, the Gazetteer indexes chateaus, vineyards, and other locations found in the maps. With changes in climate affecting growing regions and social media bringing smaller vineyards to light, readers will appreciate the coverage of these newer locations.
VERDICT Wine continues to be a popular topic, and this updated atlas will interest browsers and travelers.
