OrangeReviewStarFirst novelist Rockaway has crafted a sexy, heartfelt romance with exotic locations, strong themes, and a great love story. Being abandoned on the first day of a girls-only trip to Hong Kong turns out better for Sophie Bruno than she could have imagined. When best friend Elena heads back to the dysfunctional relationship she can't live without, Sophie heads out for a night on the town and meets Carson, an artist surviving on his trust fund. Following a sojourn in Macau, during which Carson spends all his spontaneous casino winnings on a luxury hotel room, he invites Sophie to join him in traveling the world. Sophie must choose between her stable IT career in New York and her dreams of adventure. As with most major life decisions, reaching a conclusion is neither fast nor simple, and readers will enjoy the process of Sophie's self-discovery, peppered as it is with well-drawn characters and itineraries of fantastic vacations.
VERDICT With its spirited yet credible plot and vividly intricate characters, this debut novel shines. Sophie and Carson are unlikely soul mates who steer each other's paths in opposite directions until they reach a happy medium.
