First released to critical acclaim in 1979, The War at Home was restored and rereleased to coincide with the 2018 U.S. midterm elections. The film highlights the antiwar movement of the 1960s and 1970s, particularly the experience at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. It provides an in-your-face view of the civilian population during the Vietnam War and of the war that students and other passive resistors conducted on America's governmental system, armed forces, and idea of patriotism. The directors employ a powerful combination of outstanding archival footage and interviews with students, community leaders, Vietnam vets, and participants from all points of view to tell this important story. This film's rerelease comes at a time when political discourse in the United States is at its most divisive since the Vietnam era and can help to teach a new generation the lessons of the antiwar era.
VERDICT Highly recommended for U.S. history buffs and anyone interested in becoming politically active.
