Unlike congressional biographical reference sources, which need to be updated every two years, reference books on the Supreme Court justices, who are tenured for life, require less frequent updates. The last edition of this work was published in 1995; Cushman (Supreme Court Historical Soc.), who edited the previous volume, here provides profiles of the most recent members of the court and revised bibliographies and charts of congressional confirmations and appointments. Arranged chronologically by date of appointment, the entries, which each average about four to five pages in length, contain a biographical portrait, a discussion of the major cases heard during the justice's term, and interesting anecdotal material on their families, interests, and hobbies. Black-and-white photographs and illustrations enhance the work; a keyword index provides easy access to the text.
VERDICT A superb ready-reference source and the most up-to-date one available on the topic. Highly recommended for public and academic libraries.
