This collection's first story, "The Slickers," is an adventure tale in which a cowboy sheriff must face down an East Coast gang. "Murder Afloat" involves a mysterious attack on a ship carrying dope. The final piece, "Killer Ape," features a plot to frame an orangutan for murder. Of these contributions, "Murder Afloat" is the strongest, owing to quick pacing and the ever-tightening odds of survival. "The Slickers," on the other hand, is the weakest, with problems in pacing and a lead character who is frustratingly bumbling one minute and dangerously competent the next. The voice effected by the sheriff in "The Slickers" is grating and flies in the face of Galaxy's positive record of casting and vocal direction. The voice work on the other two stories is better.
VERDICT This is an uneven entry in a usually solid series. The production values are still high, but some missteps are taken. Recommended for lovers of old radio and hard-boiled detectives.
