In this volume, Wylie-Kellerman posits that the present era will see the crumbling of systems that have long been in place, including capitalism, militarism, racism, and individualism. This book draws on a diversity of voices to address raising kids who will contribute to building a more just world. In one essay, AME deacon Nick Peterson writes about infertility, in the context of his being raised by several generations of an “extended and inclusive” Black family where kinship meant fostering children and taking care of neighbors, beyond blood ties. In another essay, economist Susan Taylor discusses creating a family culture of generosity. Other topics include education, spirituality, antiracism, resisting patriarchy, and honoring the Earth.
VERDICT The range of narrators is representative and inclusive; their perspectives and expertise add value to this work, which is sure to be of ongoing interest.
