Treave, a pen name for author Fiona Ford (“Liberty Girls” series), debuts with a heartrending story of grief, romance, and starting over, set in England’s West Country. After the tragic death of her son, Zoe flees Australia, finding work in a hospice facility in Bath. Treasuring her son’s last words, written down for her by a nurse, Zoe decides to become a notekeeper—capturing her patients’ final words for their grieving families. Her new boss Ben has different ideas about this side project. Narrator Sofia Zervudachi is a master of the myriad UK and Australian accents represented throughout the story. Zervudachi provides a convincing and affecting portrait of Zoe, who convinces Ben of the importance of her work, all the while trying to heal from her grief and the loose ends she left behind in Australia.
VERDICT Treave offers a poignant story, addressing the importance of facing one’s past and easing the way for people facing the end of life. An excellent fit for listeners who enjoyed Jojo Moyes’s Me Before You or Tammy Robinson’s Photos of You.
