OrangeReviewStarThis latest from Quirk ("John Hayes" and "Mike Ford" series) centers on by-the-book FBI agent Peter Sutherland, whose father's treasonous past looms over his career. Fixated on quelling any suspicion of his allegiance, Peter finally sees an opportunity for promotion as a night agent in the White House Situation Room. There he receives a frantic phone call from a woman named Rose Larkin. Someone has broken into her aunt and uncle's home and murdered them. Before their deaths, they gave Rose a phone number to the night agent and a message: "…OSPREY was right. It's happening in six days, and they have the red ledger." Thus Peter and Rose have less than a week to solve the mystery because all who know about the ledger and what's about to happen are being eliminated.
VERDICT Quirk's chilling and modern scenario of foreign influence reaching into the highest reaches of government will be thoroughly enjoyed by political thriller junkies. [See Prepub Alert, 7/2/18.]
