A woman arrives at Wick’s estate, seeking shelter. Wick, the Marquess of Cheswick, welcomes her in only to realize that she’s Lady Louisa, an heiress from a distant estate. Louisa has escaped her cruel aunt, but she has to enter the marriage market this season in order to preserve her inheritance. Wick has trouble opening his heart and is desperate to avoid socializing, especially with the ton. However, something has endeared Louisa to him, and he thinks that for her, he may do anything. Hastings (The Duchess Contract) writes a compelling story of loss, trauma, and the courage to keep trying.
VERDICT Combining the Regency season with the runaway woman trope makes for a delightful story.
