Though she has a successful marketing career and is married to a busy doctor, Alison is unhappy. When her childhood friend Sophie dies of a drug overdose, Alison decides to return home to England for the funeral. Reuniting with her childhood pals, "the Savages," stirs old feelings in Alison, and she decides to take a break from her life and stay in England. Trying to understand what happened to her friend, Alison begins to investigate Sophie's life and, ultimately, enters into an affair with her childhood crush, Sophie's brother Matt. Despite red herrings, the listener eventually suspects the disturbing truth long before Alison does. Still, this doesn't spoil the story as it's enjoyable to observe Alison's journey from denial to awareness. Narrator Henrietta Miere expertly captures the voices of Alison and her friends while communicating their unique personalities in this suspenseful domestic drama.
VERDICT Perfect for fans of Paula Hawkins's The Girl on the Train and A.J. Finn's The Woman in the Window. Recommended. ["Lyrical writing, witty dialog, and some characters' dishonesty will intrigue fans of Liane Moriarty": LJ 1/18 review of the Little A: Amazon hc.]
