In Volume 1 of Hubbard's "Mission Earth" series, originally published in 1985, listeners discover the 110-planet Voltar Empire and the Voltarians' plot to invade Planet Earth. Except the invasion might be fake, a diversion allowing a tyrant to seize power. In a world riven by government secrets, global warming, and drugs, this satirical and thought-provoking sf yarn details a desperate and dangerous plot that may lead to the end of the world. The multiple readers (85 actors), sound effects, and creative use of music enhance the story's atmosphere. The sound effects can be a little disconcerting at first, as listeners may not expect to hear cymbals, horns, computer bleeps, etc. However, they enhance the experience.
VERDICT Enjoyable and thought provoking, this audiobook will appeal to fans of sf, espionage, adventure, and humorous satire.
