Desperate for a chance to prove herself to her father, Aimee Thornton-Jones convinces her cousin, Evie Jenkins, to trade places. Aimee will work for her father’s company in Evie’s place while Evie will spend six weeks in London pretending to be an heiress and visiting museums to her heart’s content. It seems simple, until Alexander Trenton, Duke of Hargrave, intervenes. Determined to stop his cousin from making the same mistakes he did, Alexander sets out to expose Evie as an American “dollar princess,” out to trade her millions for a title and a place in high society. But the pull of their attraction for one another is too great. In this twist on the classic prince and a pauper tale, Michaels combines romance and mystery to create an intriguing story. The romance between the main characters builds quickly, and the addition of the mystery adds depth to the story, creating a sense of urgency in the characters and readers. The characters are well rounded, although the duke’s continual, same arguments become repetitive.
VERDICT Fans of Julia Quinn won’t want to miss the first in a series of Victorian-era character switch novels from Michaels (The Bachelor Betrayal).
