College gives many young adults their first taste of independence—including managing their own health. In this volume, the authors, both high school athletic coaches, discuss a variety of topics, including nutrition (which can be challenging for students to define for themselves when faced with only dining hall options); exercise; responsible alcohol consumption; sleep habits; and stress. Writing in a conversational, intimate tone, the authors reflect on their own youthful mistakes to caution readers. The book is peppered with profanity (assailants who slip date rape drugs into drinks are called “sick fucks”; driving while under the influence is “never fucking worth it”). Although much of the information is helpful, the book unfortunately falls short of its titular promise, failing to address significant topics such as illness, mental health, and domestic violence. Safe sex and relationships are covered briefly in the section on stress, and rape is discussed in the chapter on alcohol, but the authors don’t thoroughly explore sexual health issues, such as contraception or sexually transmitted infections.
VERDICT Though there is some useful material in this health guide for college students, it’s not enough to make up for the omissions. .
