Tinsel Monroe, a late-night radio DJ based in Melbourne, Australia, hosts The Graveyard Shift, a popular show that features everything horror—movies, music, gossip, and more. One night, during a promotional ticket contest, a young woman named Mera calls in and is murdered by a mysterious assailant on air. Thinking it’s a stunt, Tinsel ignores it but finds out from hot cop Vic James that it was real. Thus begins a series of violent murders that mimic slasher movies and seem focused on Tinsel. The growing relationship between Tinsel and Vic is surprisingly affecting and is spiced with plenty of steamy sex scenes. There’s also gore aplenty. Although the serial killer’s identity is disappointingly apparent and Tinsel’s actions are often perplexing, the plot and characters are still engaging. Taryn Ryan capably narrates, using a variety of voices and acting out the text cues (e.g., laughing, sighing, hesitating). Her pacing is good, increasing the tension as Tinsel’s situation becomes more dire.
VERDICT Despite the predictable ending, Lewis’s (Mockingbird) latest should appeal to horror film fans and suspense and romance readers who don’t mind a bit of gore.
