VERDICT Stephen R. Thorne's somewhat laconic reading style is a perfect match for Hammett's terse text. Readers who have only read or seen the movies of Hammett's more popular The Thin Man and The Maltese Falcon are in for a treat. Recommended for all mystery readers and anyone else who just likes good fiction.
