OrangeReviewStarFans of 2009's The Piano Teacher have long been awaiting this new novel from Lee, and it does not disappoint. Lee introduces us to three American women in Hong Kong: Mercy, a Korean American, feckless and fresh out of Columbia University, who was stumbling her way through life before a tragedy for which she is responsible truly calls her up short; Margaret, once a happy wife and mother, who has hired Mercy and is now riven by loss; and Hilary, a wealthy housewife desperate to have a child but stalled by indecision and questions about her marriage. Lee moves smoothly among the three women, connecting their troubling story lines in effective and ultimately tender ways. At the same time, Lee paints a portrait of the larger expat community, clarifying how difficult expatriate life can be.
VERDICT An affecting work for most readers. [See Prepub Alert, 7/20/15.]
