Although the enemies-becoming-lovers premise is a common one, strong supporting characters elevate this second entry in Delinsky's trilogy (after The Dream), originally published in 1990, above the generic. Both long single, though for vastly different reasons, interior designer Christine Gillette and builder Gideon Lowe are left reeling when their contentious professional relationship develops into romance. A major factor in the success of their relationship is not mentioned until more than halfway through the novel, which makes the progression of their relationship feel rushed and the book's ending seem a bit abrupt. Small things, such as the mention of car phones, date this title, but the central story is timeless. Erin Yuen's lively and clear narration keeps the reader interested in Christine and Gideon's journey.
VERDICT For collections where contemporary romances by authors such as Susan Mallery and Jill Shalvis are popular.
