Chernow (Alexander Hamilton) is writing on a topic that he knows intimately, the history of finance in the United States. Since these essays were originally published 20 years ago, it would have been nice to have a section discussing any updates in the intervening years or a note from the publisher as to why it is being revived at this time. This title is intended to be a brief overview of the transition of bankers from relational to institutional. Chernow's opening essay is enjoyable, but the sections on the Morgans and the Warburgs are perhaps condensed too much, and most readers of Chernow will prefer the full-length books. At just four and a half hours, and with a superb narrator in Michael Kramer, this title is enjoyable but light.
VERDICT Recommended for larger libraries with a strong business collection. ["Appropriate for larger business collections": LJ 6/1/97 review of the Vintage hc.]
