The Close-Up

Harlequin Audio. (I Heart SF, Bk. 1). Apr. 2022. 10:25 hrs. ISBN 9781488213953. $27.99. CONTEMPORARY ROMANCE
Fresh out of a bad relationship, internet docuseries producer Naomi Ellorza-Hays hits a dive bar, where she downs shots and vows to stop dating men. Though she still manages to flirt with a handsome guy at the bar—and to throw up on his shoes. When that guy becomes her next work assignment, Naomi vows she can stay professional while filming a bio series on the porn-star-turned-famous-couples’ therapist, Simon Rutler. Totally professional. Even if Naomi also has to make Simon vow that they will only be friends.
VERDICT In this solid single point-of-view audio romance from Smith (On Location), narrator Donnabella Mortel brings the secondhand embarrassment and slow-burn buildup to Naomi’s and Simon’s steamy relationship to life, all while doing a great job keeping various character voices distinct. Recommended as a read-alike for The Roommate by Rosie Danan.
