This duo from Galaxy's "Stories from the Golden Age" series offer loads of action, romance, and foreign intrigue. American adventurer Eddie Moran falls into the eponymous Black Sultan's clutches after killing two of his agents in French Morocco. While a "guest" in the sultan's palace, Eddie meets Sheila Gordon, an Englishwoman being forced to marry the sinister royal. Eddie must find a way to free her while not scuttling his own escape plans, but how? Devil pits Royal Marines ace pilot and spy Capt. Gary Forsythe against Japanese intelligence officer Ito Shinohari in a long cat-and-mouse game in which the black-clad flyer feared as the dreaded "devil with wings" has foiled the Japanese at every turn. Shinohari frames Forsythe for a faked murder, and the victim's sister is hot for revenge (of course, they fall in love even though she shoots him). A full cast accompanied by music and sound effects captures the drama and pure fun of these vintage pulp stories.
VERDICT Although short in length, these are long on adventure.
