Tales from the Crypt

Escaping from their moldering graves, the Crypt-Keeper, the Old Witch, and the Vault-Keeper return from the dead to infect today's generation with the EC (Entertaining Comics) brand of anthology horror. "Die-vestment" deals with the rich getting richer and using their wealth to buy body parts from the poor in a bid to prolong their lives, while "Picture Perfect" unveils how one well-placed social media image can ruin innocent lives. "Leather or Not" navigates the narrow intersection among murder, outrageous tans, and high fashion, leaving "Zombie Bank" to reveal what happens when you are the only human working in a bank of the undead. With the addition of a few reprints by horror legend Bernie Wrightson, Super Genius's reconstituted compilation breaths a fetid new half-life into the classic anthology format. Such collections by nature are a creative grab bag of highs and lows, dependent on the different teams and their approach to four-color fear. The creators here are a mix between established talent and newcomers, but many of the biggest artists are only contributing single-page art.
VERDICT Despite more successful tales than misfires, overall this remains a misshapen monster.
