In White's third "Voidwitch Saga" story, genetically modified, telepathic supersoldier Mars Xi takes on a new mission. Her young companion Pale is suffering from seizures, and the only person who can help is a man whom Mars hates more then anyone else in the universe, her father. Marius Teo engineered Mars and then sold her as an infant to a military program that shaped and warped her into a killing machine. But Mars will do anything to help Pale, so she goes on a search for her dad with half the Imperial army on her trail. Her quest brings her into contact with her past in unexpected ways, and soon she's faced with difficult choices. Luckily, her AI ship, mutant cat, and the powerful Pale are there to help. Though readers may want to start with the first book in the series (Killing Gravity), there's enough backstory here for new readers not to feel lost.
VERDICT This breezy, engaging read, though darker in tone, will appeal to fans of Martha Wells's "Murderbot Diaries" series.
