Created by Paul Abbott (Shameless; State of Play; Cracker) and Frank Cottrell Boyce (Millions), both veterans of Coronation Street, and with strong support from solid screenwriters such as Russell T. Davies (Doctor Who; Queer as Folk), Springhill debuted in the 1996–97 television season on the British SkyOne channel and lasted only two seasons. It is set in Liverpool and centers on the Freemans, Liz (the late Gilly Coman) and Jack (the late Jonathan Barlow), and their family of five children. Then Eva Morrigan (Katharine Rogers) arrives, with a knowledge of the Freeman family secrets and a personal agenda for revenge. The episodes contain intrigue, romance, murder, and aspects of the supernatural—witchcraft, time travel, apparitions, and more.
VERDICT This quirky paranormal-laced soap opera will interest fans of British serial drama and the otherworldly.
