When a female helicopter pilot is captured by the Taliban in Afghanistan, veteran Navy SEAL Gil Shannon is sent to rescue her. McEwen (coauthor, American Sniper) creates physical, emotional, and bureaucratic obstacles for his hero to overcome, while providing unobtrusive background to make this endless conflict fathomable. Although this thriller is drenched in macho posturing, the female characters are vivid and the Afghan loyalists sympathetic. Brian Hutchinson handles the numerous characters with great skill, giving one a voice similar to that of Sam Shepard to emphasize his rugged manliness.
VERDICT Recommended for those interested in contemporary war fiction as well as those wishing to understand Afghanistan better.
