Eaves struggled her whole life to please people and to fit in. Here the author holds nothing back as she describes her childhood struggles with weight and self-image, her bipolar disorder, and alcoholism. The author employs a conversational tone, and readers will feel as if they are listening to an old friend. Her sense of humor is evident as she talks about “woo-woo things” (her own words) like fortune-telling at her granddaughter’s carnival. This memoir has great pacing, and Eaves mostly keeps her tale linear as she discusses topics ranging from descriptions of Mardi Gras carnival season to feelings of struggling with mental health to finally finding acceptance.
VERDICT A quick, fascinating read about a former Mardi Gras queen trying to find her path in life. Recommended for all memoir collections.
