OrangeReviewStarThe December 1968 flight of Apollo 8 to the moon was one of the most spectacular, and daring, achievements in history but has been overshadowed by the landing of men on the moon some seven months later. In this well-researched and -written account of Apollo 8's achievement, the feat of Frank Borman, Jim Lovell (of Apollo 13 fame), William Anders, and the supporting crew at NASA are given their due. Ray Porter's expressive reading is a fine match of text and voice. He enunciates well and moves at an appropriate tempo. Listeners, especially those who remember this mission from childhood, will find it hard to stop. Kurson does well reading his own extensive and well-organized notes and sources.
VERDICT Public libraries should purchase. ["Space buffs will enjoy this accessible and engaging account of human ingenuity and exploration": LJ 1/18 starred review of the Random hc.]
