Though Lerman is a Lenore Marshall Poetry Prize winner, don't expect a "lyrical" read; she carries over her terrific thrustingly narrative style into this zingy first novel. Lerman's heroine, the nicely drawn Laurie, is a bartender who declares, "I just wasn't a mainstream person." No surprise; when she was a child at Rockaway Beach with Uncle Avi as he tried tuning in to pulses from life out there somewhere, she seems to have seen an alien that haunts her dreams. Now a psychic has dangerously picked up on her past.
VERDICT Fun reading for sf fans looking for engaging backstory and literary fans seeking an escapist edge.
