Wildfires, floods, and extreme heat and cold are all being experienced globally. Investigative reporter Lustgarten (Run to Failure) argues that the debate is over; climate change and global warming have arrived in the United States. He focuses this book on one of the major outcomes: human climate migration, as people move from areas no longer habitable to places which they hope have a livable climate. While the entire planet is affected and subject to mass migration, the core of this book is about migration patterns to and within the United States. Lustgarten paints a broad canvas, looking at all the forces that led to this movement, including certain events and policy decisions. He also examines the options individuals take in the here and now and how that, in turn, scales up to group movements. He also discusses the geographic areas most likely to experience the biggest migratory impact in the future.
VERDICT Scientific and individual humanitarian aspects come together in a moving but scary portrait of what will happen if climate change continues to make places uninhabitable. Readers will find this book to be quite informative and prescient. Give to those who enjoyed Jared Diamond’s Collapse.
