Fox is one of Canada’s most accomplished potters. Largely self-taught, she began her pottery journey at age 13, and it soon became her obsession and set the course of her life. Fox has created a beautifully illustrated book that is part memoir and part pottery manual to share her sometimes-bumpy path to becoming the potter she is today. In the biographical section, she shares how she discovered pottery making in grade eight when she was forced to take an art class. The moment her hands touched the clay, she was hooked. Following the personal story, Fox shares some of her pottery techniques, acquired wisdom, and advice to those pursuing pottery as a career. Finally, she wants to give back to the pottery community with the establishment of the Mary Fox Legacy Project, which will provide mentorship and artist-in-residence opportunities for young people trying to establish themselves as clay artists. Proceeds from the sale of this book will benefit the project.
VERDICT A wonderful look into the life of a potter. Not a beginners’ how-to guide, but definitely of interest to those who share a passion for clay.
