Arlene Favier expects to continue her family’s legacy as breeders of fine racehorses, until her father is killed when their home burns down. His death exposes the truth about the family’s finances, and Arlene must find work in order to keep her family afloat. Her knowledge of French and her mechanical skills land her a job as an ambulance driver for the American Women’s Hospital on the European front. It is difficult and dangerous work—the ambulances are finicky, and the women are frequently in the line of fire—but bravery and determination keep Arlene going. Although consorting with men is against the rules of the hospital, Arlene goes on an awkward date with a dashing American officer, whose attentions persist although she rejects his advances. When she hears a rumor that the officer may be selling lifesaving supplies on the black market, Arlene risks her life to investigate and bring the officer to justice.
VERDICT Creel (The Whiskey Sea) brings the story of the World War I–era American Women’s Hospital to vivid life through Arlene’s eyes. Readers who enjoy World War I fiction will appreciate both the combination of wartime action and personal drama and Arlene’s inspiring courage in the face of danger.
