Master and God

. 94.95.
The richly detailed and atmospheric turbulence of Rome and its environs during the reign of the paranoid emperor Domitian are vividly brought to life through the eyes of a Pretorian guard, Gaius Vinius, and a hairdresser, Flavia Lucilla, in Davis’s new stand-alone epic. The unlikely pairing of these characters makes for an interesting interplay. Fans of Davis’s Falco series may also appreciate this novel, as might those who enjoy historical fiction, especially with a Roman flavor.
VERDICT British actor Robin Sachs brings a polished, measured decorum to his narration, but it’s surprising that a feminine counterpoint was not provided for Flavia. Further, the Author’s Notes included in print have been omitted. [“Davis’s Marcus Didius Falco mysteries are so deftly observed that I have no trouble recommending this historical saga. All historical fiction fans should enjoy,” read the review of the St. Martin’s Press hc, LJ 5/1/12.—Ed.]
