The basis of the recent movie Love and Friendship, starring Kate Beckinsale, Lady Susan is Austen's delightful epistolary novel about a charming, amoral, and highly manipulative recent widow. Any man who does not admire her must be made to worship at her feet. Her own disappointing daughter, Frederica, must marry the rich man her mother has chosen for her. Unlike other Austen heroines, Lady Susan is just plain bad. And yet she gets a happy(ish) ending. Although one of Austen's earliest works, Lady Susan was not published until well after Austen's death, possibly because of its heroine's powerful personality and total lack of remorse. Rosalyn Landor does her usual first-rate job of voicing the various characters, especially the malicious (mental) whine of Lady Susan.
VERDICT Recommended for all Austen lovers, classic fiction enthusiasts, and historical romance readers.
