John Eyre

In this retelling of Jane Eyre from Matthews (Fair as a Star; Gentleman Jim), John Eyre heads to Thornfield Hall to create a new life for himself as the tutor to two young boys. Those boys, Stephen and Peter, are the wards of a wealthy widow, Mrs. Rochester; John is surprised to find her beautiful but she’s often absent from Thornfield. As the days pass, John begins to experience strange things: visions, whispering in the walls, and rattles that go unexplained. He tries to focus on the boys, who speak no English, are deathly pale, and are scared of every shadow, but his interest in the elusive and mesmerizing mistress of the house has him spellbound.
