While abstract painting does not lend itself especially well to the how-to guide, the author believes that successful abstraction requires a great degree of discipline and control. Roig (Practical Course in Drawing and Painting; Painting Still Lifes) distills here the basics of abstract painting, explaining its origins, suggesting techniques, and describing various styles. Short exercises, some inspired by the work of famous abstract painters such as Klee, Tàpies, and Gerhard Richter, give readers a taste of working nonobjectively.
VERDICT This guide is aimed at beginning artists interested in departing from realism and could be helpful for anyone unfamiliar with but wanting to understand abstract painting.
