Gregor has told readers how not to do some pretty big things—How Not To Die; How Not To Diet—and his latest book is built on the same basic premise, that by mapping the habits of the longest-living and healthiest populations, readers will be able to outsmart their genes (and their jeans). He’s received some criticism, much like Michael Pollan, for prescribing a somewhat privileged healthism and for implying people have full agency when it comes to everything from chronic pain to cancer. As with his previous books, he’s made the chimerical seem actionable (or at least aspirational) by offering a four-part overview leading up to his ultimate prescription, “the Anti-Aging Eight.”
VERDICT Heavily footnoted, carefully researched, and ultimately prescriptive not of pills and potions but of foods close to nature and fairly accessible, this title may not be the magical fountain of youth, but it delivers good advice in palatable, practical ways that will make every blueberry taste like it’s erasing a wrinkle or two.
