Filmed among the vineyards of five wineries in Sonoma, CA, Harvest recounts the story of the difficult, rainy grape-producing harvest of 2011. It provides a look into a precarious point in the season when the year's product is rushed in from the vines. The footage includes interviews with wine producers and harvesters and scenes of grape picking. Of particular interest are the members of a crew of women pickers, unusual in this occupation. One wishes, in fact, that their story had been the focus of the film so as to provide more insight into their experiences as migrant workers, especially in a male-dominated workforce.
VERDICT Harvest is not designed to elicit adoration or celebration of a particular wine. Instead, it's an honest exploration of the effort underlying wine production and those who are arguably the unsung heroes and heroines of each vintage. Recommended for collections where materials on wine have proven to be popular.
