There’s plenty of detecting going on in Knight’s (
Neon Lights Are Veins) thriller, but in the end, detecting doesn’t count for much; violence does. A moral monster, X works for badass drug dealer Repo. He abducts a young woman, Tess, for him. Tess’s mother searches for her daughter with no success and eventually joins forces with Perry, another parent whose daughter disappeared a year before Tess did. Perry had hired a PI, Joe, to find his daughter but Joe didn’t find her, and now Joe’s missing, undercover, disguised as a Mexican drug dealer trying to break into Repo’s gang. Because Repo has something big planned. He intends to use an abandoned church, Gallows Dome, not only to launder his drug money but to bring on Armageddon, blood sacrifice and all. Repo’s plans, however, implode in an explosion of violence that leaves many dead and others scarred.
VERDICT This no-holds-barred noir from a writer to watch will grab readers’ attention, and regardless of the graphically described violence, it’s fun. Knight isn’t Elmore Leonard, but they come out of the same stew pot.
