U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agent (and single mom) Peyton Cole (last seen in
Bitter Crossing), having just returned to her hometown of Maine from Texas, investigates a cabin explosion, fearing it might be a meth lab. But the discovery of a corpse with a bullet in its skull and detonators cause Peyton to interrogate childhood friend Sherry Duvall, whose brother is implicated in the crime and whose parents died in an act of murder-suicide shortly after Peyton had questioned them. It seems Sherry and her husband, Chip, are involved in too many facets of life in Aroostook County. Then there are indications of eastern European criminals moving into the area.
VERDICT Keeley overcomplicates his second mystery with an abundance of federal and state agents and story lines, making the plot difficult to follow. Peyton is a well-drawn, sympathetic protagonist, but she's almost overshadowed by the supporting characters. Still, the Maine ambience will be a plus for readers who savor Paul Doiron's "Mike Bowditch" novels. Also of interest to fans of Nevada Barr.
