OrangeReviewStarFirst published in 2007 and followed by a second edition in 2009, the new edition of this beloved reference standard from historical writer Mills (Professional Genealogy) continues to inform genealogists and historical researchers of all kinds on how to source and cite everything from books to DNA. Content and structure are similar to those in previous editions. Chapters 1 and 2 concisely explain the fundamentals of evidence analysis and citation and remain essential reading for anyone doing research. The remaining 12 chapters examine specific record types and follow the same basic navigation principles. Every chapter begins with its own contents list, pointing to "QuickCheck Models," which dissect the anatomy of citations referencing various sources within a record type, and "Guidelines & Examples," which outline in detail every conceivable source researchers may encounter for that record type. The book concludes with a newly expanded glossary. This edition also contains a QuickStart guide on the inside cover page that offers a step-by-step manual to using the volume, especially helpful for readers daunted by its heft and denseness. Other updates include descriptions of additional sources and materials identified since the previous edition, expanded coverage of genetic citations, and updates reflecting the ever-shifting landscape of Internet sources and major online content providers. Besides the indisputable wealth of information in this work, its enduring value continues to be expressed through Mills's emphasis on the importance of understanding the context and meaning of sources as well as how to identify them accurately.
VERDICT Already an essential reference, this updated edition is especially important for staying current with understanding and citing available historical resources.
