Six years have passed since FLO, an identical planet to Earth, appeared on the opposite side of Earth’s orbit in Dark Nights. Because of the shift from FLO’s old universe, all life forms alive on the planet at the time of the shift are now aging at one third to two times their previous normal rate. Trade with Earth has become a lifeline for survival on FLO. Earth resisted the pull of AI as government, maintaining individual countries across the planet. Decades ahead technologically, FLO did not. And with a new AI slowly taking over, no one has heard from the old AI controlling health care and education on FLO. This new, authoritative AI, in charge of the entire FLO economy, is squashing all signs of rebellion at the source. Quantum processor manufacturing has been made illegal on FLO and all FLO citizens are required to wear RAIM bracelets with free unlimited data and communications that track their every move. Signs of strain are showing. Humanity is on a collision course.
VERDICT Fans of space operas or sf assessing technological benevolence with lots of detail and point-of-view characters will enjoy.
