In Grant’s sequel to and continuation of Dangerous Ground, archaeologist Fiona Carver and wildlife photographer Dean Slater, who had parted ways, find themselves thrown together on Ruby Island in the Caribbean. A billionaire wants their help to make a nature documentary about the history and native fauna of the island, which he privately leases. However, suspicious events point to one or more characters having an ulterior motive. Readers who haven’t read Grant’s first “Fiona Carver” romance may find themselves confused or frustrated by constant references to previous events. While Fiona is undoubtedly smart, she is also occasionally oblivious to jarringly obvious situations, insisting that some interactions are between “just friends” when they appear very differently to readers. Fiona and Dean long for each other, but their excuses for why they can’t be together read less like obstacles and more like lip service to a plot device.
VERDICT Readers who can suspend their disbelief will enjoy Grant’s romantic suspense novel most, but it is a solid choice for a collection.
