A common factor in the development and growth of most of the world's cities is their proximity to bodies of water. Located where a navigable river meets Lake Michigan in America's heartland, the bustling city of Chicago began its history along the Chicago River, and its expansion was dependent upon access to and transportation along it. From the first wooden footbridge built in 1832—curiously, so that citizens could cross to a tavern—through an array of various design types, Chicago's bridges have reflected our country's ingenuity and technological advances. Using a rich array of vintage drawings and photographs, crisp graphics, and computer-generated images, the producers retrace the evolution of these bridges. Of particular interest is a review of the many films in which these spans appear.
VERDICT Offering the always welcome chapter selection option and several supplementary in-depth interviews, this affordable program will attract a variety of viewers.
