Rogak (One Big Happy Family: Heartwarming Stories of Animals Caring for One Another; Dogs of Courage) introduces readers to hard-working cats around the world. As in Oswell Blakeston's 1963 Working Cats and the pictorial book of the same name by Terry deRoy Gruber, working cats of all stripes are featured. Some jobs highlighted may be a bit tongue-in-cheek, such as furniture tester and exercise trainer, while others, such as a feline who is able to detect changes in blood sugar for a diabetic companion and cats providing palliative care in hospice environments, are more serious. Cats from around the world are featured, and each vignette is accompanied by a picture of the working cat. Some famous cats, such as Baker & Taylor's eponymously named duo of Scottish Folds and the more recent Internet sensation Grumpy Cat, are featured.
VERDICT Going beyond the traditional roles of cats as mousers, this fun and lighthearted book would make a great addition to any cat lover's library.
