Picking up shortly after the events of Cast in Flame, Sagara's latest series entry has Lord Nightshade still missing and his younger brother increasingly distraught. When Kaylin, her partner Severin, and their usual Hawk compatriots Tain and Teela are dispatched to a strange murder scene that retains traces of a familiar magic, this case could signal the end of the city Kaylin loves.
VERDICT Jaded fantasy readers may appreciate that Sagara's books are set in such a compressed timeframe—it's been just over a year since the events of the series launch, Cast in Courtlight, and Kaylin has grown up only as much as a young woman would be expected to in the intervening time.
