High Bloods are humans with extra powers, such as necromancy. Normals consider them freaks but don't hesitate to use them when required. Cops, including Duncan O'Connor, view necromancy as a necessary evil. When Callie Brown is called on Duncan's most recent case, she discovers the victim's mind has an unexpected occupant. Another necromancer is already there; he pushes Callie out violently, and she collapses. When she wakes up, she learns that Duncan is her only key to solving the supernatural crime. Ultimately, Ivy's first "Sentinels" novel spends too much time sating the characters' lust and not enough time building the world of the High Bloods. Still, Jim Frangione's narration is excellent.
VERDICT Even if the worldbuilding is a bit light, fans of Christine Feehan, Sherrilyn Kenyon, and J.R. Ward will be happy to have a new series to sink their teeth into.
