Balance Point

Baen. (Orphan's Legacy, Bk. 3). Apr. 2014. 304p. ISBN 9781476736440. pap. $15. SF
Covert ops captain Jazen Parker and his partner Kit are friends with telepathic three-eyed Mort, representative of the only other known sentient species in the universe. They are escorting Mort back to his home world for his mating when an old enemy stirs up the simmering conflict between Earth and its estranged colony of Yavet. Earthers think Yavet is an overcrowded, polluted police state. Yavet's leaders hate Earth for denying them the extraplanetary ships that would allow them to expand off their world, and they are always looking for a way to steal the technology they desire. Jazen might unwittingly hand them what they need when he travels to Yavet to resolve some old personal business.
VERDICT Military sf fans will enjoy this third series entry (after 2011's Undercurrents) that has all the action and smart-alecky dialog you want in the subgenre. Recommend to those who enjoy Robert Heinlein's Starship Troopers and John Scalzi's Old Man's War.
