Two years ago, Jackson "Jax" Rutledge and Gianna Rossi were a hot item—until he dropped out of her life without a word. Their paths cross again when Gianna is working to close a business deal and Jax is sent in to support the opposing side. The scion of a wealthy political family, Jax is a possessive, rich alpha male with stalkerish tendencies. Gianna comes from a large and loving Italian clan in the restaurant business. He immediately tries to renew their relationship, and she must decide if it's worth putting her heart—and possibly her career and family—on the line for a man she's never gotten over. Why did he leave her two years ago? What secrets is he still keeping? Originally released as two e-novellas, Day's story maintains its awkward structure in these two bite-sized audiobooks. Afterburn ends without much closure, and Aftershock picks up with little effort at introduction or backstory. The work is well narrated by Amy McFadden, and the supporting characters add a lot of warmth and humor, but, unfortunately, the erotic action grinds to a halt when Day employs such expressions as "he ate at my mouth" to describe kisses between her two leads. Despite the stories' charms, the expensive two-book format makes this an unsound investment for libraries.
