Mrs. Alice Malcolm is a governess with a secret. When Lord Adam Diamond sees her, something about her bearing and manner tells him not only is she not just a governess, but she’s the one for him. Even though he is supposed to be courting someone else, he finds himself manufacturing ways to cross Alice’s path. After one too many shared kisses, Alice flees London in an attempt to stop the attraction in its tracks. It is at that point where the mystery of Alice Malcolm begins to unravel for Adam and for readers. Her previous marriage to a spendthrift and drunkard ended when he fell to his death while visiting his mistress. Her former husband’s brother, who inherited the estate, sold everything he could get his hands on to pay his brother’s remaining debts, including all the furniture at her childhood home. Adam, finding out her true identity, cares nothing about her past, and the two marry, only to be hounded by Alice’s past.
