With the exception of a few embedded narratives (including a remarkable series of text messages in the title story), these stories are all written in the first person, a strategy that has both benefits and drawbacks. The benefit is that the voice becomes familiar and reliable, providing continuity from story to story. The drawback is that the individual pieces sometimes feel less distinct, blurring the effect of the collection as a whole. In this impressive debut story collection, Hemenway shows a depth of emotion and intensity that carries the reader from start to finish. These haunting stories deserve a wide audience.
