The Loneliness of the Long-Distance Cartoonist

A hilarious, frequently cringe-inducing masterpiece from a fearless artist at the height of his powers.

Killing and Dying

With deadpan rather than dramatic art, Tomine's tales show off his mature skill with storytelling, dialog, and character. Those fond of slice-of-life comics will like this, and teachers of narrative techniques will find it helpful. Adult situations and language but minimal explicitness.

Scenes from an Impending Marriage

Tomine, known more for psychologically darker stories like Shortcomings than for straight humor, reveals considerable talent with goofy comedy. Scenes is far too short, and hopefully Tomine will draw more comedies to come. Recommended for all public libraries and, of course, as an engagement gift for this season's bridezillas and groomzillas.
